I have a Blu-ray “essentials” question for you.

My delightful and wise wife bought me a Blu-ray player for Christmas because she loves me and because I provide goods and services to her that she values.

She also gave me a handful of movies, including:

  • Inception
  • Children of Men
  • Léon: The Professional
  • District 9

And my boys also got The Avengers and Brave. Because Santa knew my wife’s plans.

All of that makes for a decent start, because I didn’t have any of those movies on DVD previously.

But here’s my question:

Obviously I’m not about to replace every DVD I already have with BDs - but are there any must-have upgrades that I should be considering? For example, I was contemplating the entire Indiana Jones BD boxset, but I couldn’t bring myself to buy it knowing that it had an extraneous disc in it that I’d never watch.

But still: upgraded Raiders. I’m conflicted.

So please tell me: what are your essentials? The movies you absolutely have to upgrade when a newer version exists?

Thor is getting some pretty decent reviews.

81% currently on Rotten Tomatoes, a so-so 58 on Metacritic, but still.

Both Variety and the Hollywood Reporter liked it, so does Entertainment Weekly.

Slate and Glenn Kenny - not so much.

In my head, anyway, I’d written it off in favor of Captain America, which to me looks more epic and I think the period setting is just a better fit for the material.

Will you go see Thor this weekend?
